Episode 150 of Love At First Scent PART TWO This was a YouTube Live broadcast streamed on Sunday 20th December 2020. Unscripted. Unedited. Unrehearsed. In this episode, I presented my list of the 10 best patchouli perfumes. Unfortunately, there were quite a few technological issues during this live stream. As you'll discover if you watch this video, the first thing that happened was that the stream was cut off after I'd finished talking about two perfumes. Voleur De Roses remains recognisable, but its drydown isn't as strong as one might have expected from the opening. Still, that likeable dirtiness of the patchouli remains intact. Sticky Fingers is such a strong testament to Bianchi's skill: all the way through to its final stages, it is coherent and legible. The patchouli makes friends with the delicious vanillic notes to create a quietly more-ish drydown. Great work. Now here's something I hadn't fully realised before about Malle's Monsieur: on the blotter, the drydown carries the distinctive whiff of... WOODY AMBERS. Perhaps this is another reason for my inability to love the scent. The patchouli is still present, to be sure, but those woody notes are too prominent for me. Rive Gauche Pour Homme is so distinctive: surely one of the best masculines of the last few decades. The herbs and mosses link with the patchouli (and some suggestions of animalic leathers) to form an admirably square-jawed scent. Une Amourette is doing that modern 'patchouli-Akigalawood' thing, which is to say that it's oddly metallic-minty-woody, with that fruity note from the top still sticking around. I think it deserves more praise than it has received. Angel... well, what can I say? In this extrait version, the patchouli is undeniably darker and dirtier, but make no mistake: this is still the candy floss daydream that we all know and love-hate. Finally, the Lutens is a marvel of leafy, tobacco-infused earthiness. An utter delight to wear. -- Thanks for watching.
