[Lee Young-ju] Basically, as you all know, logistics centers contain a lot of combustible materials. Because there are so many, the intensity of the fire increases. Also, due to the structure, there are insufficient external openings—in other words, windows—so smoke and heat are accumulating inside. In particular, the fire broke out on the sixth floor of an eight-story building. Consequently, access was not easy. Given these factors, it is clear that on-site operations are bound to proceed very slowly. Although suppression efforts are continuing today, and the fire department estimates that the initial containment will be possible by around 11 PM, the reality is that we do not know how the situation will unfold. Recently, there have been instances in other countries where firefighters arrived at logistics warehouses, believed the fire was under control, and deactivated sprinklers, only for the fire to subsequently spread and intensify again. Therefore, rather than focusing on a fixed timeframe for when the fire will be extinguished, I believe the priority should be ensuring accurate fire suppression and enabling firefighters to operate in a safe environment. What was the reason for this? ** [Lee Young-ju] During suppression operations at the site early this morning, spalling was confirmed in some slabs and other areas. Spalling occurs when the concrete covering of structures like slabs or columns partially detaches or cracks. This happens because, when exposed to high temperatures, the water vapor inside the concrete expands, causing the concrete fragments to burst. Since damage to the rebar and concrete was confirmed, we determined that there was a risk of structural collapse and ordered a withdrawal. However, based on current findings, the likelihood of a structural collapse is not high. Therefore, suppression operations are continuing.
