TRIBUN-VIDEO.COM - The United States (US) is estimated to be unable to confront the Chinese military if it is simultaneously trapped in a protracted war with Iran. This assessment comes as analysts are growing concerned about the real danger of a two-front war breaking out amid dwindling US ammunition stocks. Citing Tribunnews on July 22, this is according to an assessment by Cato Institute senior researcher Katherine Thompson. She believes the US ammunition stockpile will not be sufficient to sustain a long-term war for a matter of years. The presence of 50,000 US troops in the Middle East is now considered to be further depleting air defense missile supplies due to the wave of Iranian retaliatory attacks. Despite being hit by US airstrikes, Tehran has proven capable of launching low-cost missile and drone attacks that effectively penetrate American air defenses. Iran's penetration attack was clearly visible at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, killing two US soldiers and injuring dozens of others. Before this latest war broke out, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) noted that the US had depleted more than 3,000 strategic missiles, including Tomahawks, Patriots, and JASSMs. CSIS predicts that the majority of the US's advanced weapons stockpile will only return to normal levels by the end of the decade. While current stocks are considered sufficient to support operations in Iran, CSIS warns of a fatal vulnerability if the conflict spreads to other regions. The most dangerous scenario would be if Washington were to simultaneously face the potential for open war with China over the Taiwan issue. Responding to these concerns, Chief Pentagon Spokesperson Sean Parnell strongly denied this and emphasized that the US military remains adequately equipped. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump continues to order retaliatory airstrikes against targets in Iran following the deaths of American soldiers. Despite the escalation, diplomatic officials from both countries are reportedly still opening a small gap for a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
