A used Mustang Mach-E now averages $28,970. The used EV market is down 30-40% from its peak. And the reason is a fear I can measure for a living. 2026 is "the year of the used EV" (Recurrent's CEO). The mechanics: 71% of EVs sold in 2023-2025 were leased thanks to a tax-credit quirk — over 1.1 million of them — and those leases are ending now. J.D. Power counts 243,000 leased EVs hitting the resale market this year, 3× last year. The result: the Recurrent Price Index is down 32% year-over-year to ~$27,800, the used-EV-vs-gas price gap shrank to $897 (smallest ever), and under $20,000 the average EV is 2 years NEWER with 40,000 FEWER miles than the gas car at the same price. Why so cheap? The industry's own words: EVs depreciate ~13% harder than gas cars "in part because there's no standard way to evaluate battery health." The market prices every used EV like its battery is dying — while the data shows 3-year lease returns have negligible degradation, packs typically keep 85-90% after 100,000 miles, only ~2.5% ever need replacement, and the 8-year/100K battery warranty transfers with the car.
