However, Hertha had the first chance. Left-back and starting eleven debutant Janne Berner, after a beautiful cross from the right, found himself completely unmarked about five meters from goal, but he couldn't get his feet together in time and failed to direct his shot on target. ... As a result, Bielefeld created numerous chances – and were repeatedly thwarted by Hertha's outstanding goalkeeper, Tjark Ernst. This was particularly evident in the 35th minute when Bielefeld's Marius Wörl found himself one-on-one with Ernst after a beautiful through ball, had time to spare, but couldn't get his shot past the Hertha keeper. Two minutes later came the rather surprising opening goal for the visitors. Following a pinpoint cross from right-back Julian Eitschberger, Linus Gechter headed home to give Berlin the lead (37'). But Bielefeld remained the more dominant team at the start of the second half – and this time they found the net. In the 49th minute, a seemingly desperate, looping shot from the halfway line caught the advancing Hertha defense completely off guard – but not Bielefeld's Joel Grodowski, who, relatively unchallenged in the penalty area, volleyed the ball into the corner of the net with spectacular precision. An Eitschberger header from a beautiful Berner cross that went just over the bar (53rd minute) proved to be a brief glimmer of hope for Hertha Berlin. In the 59th minute, Grodowski again found the net, this time heading home a free kick to make it 2-1 for Bielefeld. Six minutes later, Monju Momuluh capitalized on a Berlin misplaced pass during their build-up play and launched a counter-attack to extend Arminia's lead to 3-1. The game was effectively over, but the scoreline remained unchanged. In the 74th minute, Stefano Russo headed home a corner to make it 4-1. Semir Telalovic added another goal in the second minute of stoppage time, this time a header from a corner, before Roberts Ulrdrikis completed the Hertha rout with a sixth goal in the sixth minute of added time, sealing a 6-1 victory for Bielefeld. ...
