Many people believe that if the dollar's hegemony falters, the renminbi will naturally rise to power. This is a comfortable illusion, but also a dangerous misjudgment. The financial world is not a seesaw. The renminbi doesn't automatically rise simply because the dollar falls. The core of currency internationalization has never been how many mistakes the enemy makes, but whether others are willing to trust you in the long term. The dollar system has indeed developed cracks. With the continued expansion of US debt, the increasingly frequent use of financial sanctions, and the freezing of Russia's foreign exchange reserves, global central banks have begun to reassess the jurisdictional risks of dollar assets. Gold is being bought back onto central bank balance sheets, and currency swaps, regional payment systems, and non-dollar settlements are being seriously discussed by more countries. But the dollar's mistakes do not mean the renminbi will automatically win. The renminbi's real opportunity is not to replace the dollar tomorrow, but to become a backup channel outside the dollar system for certain countries, certain trades, certain energy transactions, and certain geopolitical risk scenarios. The problem is: there is a long road between a backup channel and a global reserve currency. This road is called trust.
