TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Is 55: 10-11 Psalm — Ps 64: 10-14 Second Reading — Rom 8: 18-23 Gospel Reading — Mt 13: 1-23 Heart of Good Soil Jesus compares the word of God to a seed. The seed itself is good, yet whether it grows and bears fruit depends on the kind of soil upon which it falls. That soil is our heart. At times, our heart is like the path. We hear the word of God, but do not truly receive it, and so it is quickly lost. At times, our heart is like rocky ground. We receive God’s word with joy, but when difficulties, trials, or challenges arise, we easily fall away. At times, our heart is like thorny ground. The worries of life, our desires, and the many distractions of the world choke the word of God, so that it cannot grow well. But when our heart is like good soil, ready to listen, to receive, and to live out God’s word, our life will slowly bear fruit. Therefore, the question is not whether God’s word has power, but whether our hearts are ready to receive it.
