Deep House Vinyl Set – Soulful, Garage, and Classic House Mix
Room for Form is the result of my journey with music over the last few years. I've spent some time away from posting with the goal of crafting and honing my ability with turntables. It's been a long process to get to this point — familiarizing myself with vinyl, acquiring records, and developing enough confidence. That confidence isn't just about technical ability but the willingness to play publicly. I hadn't performed in awhile but a friend of mine (shoutout Lilia) asked me to play for her party a couple of months back. I wasn't sure if I felt ready enough for vinyl but I said screw it, let's just go for it. Looking back, I was pretty mortified going up there, especially being around people who have been doing this way longer than me. But luckily it turned out to be better than I hoped — the room was moving, people were grooving, and the vibes were undeniable. It was an unabashedly effective confidence booster that brought me to make this mix. This collection includes some of my favorite records I've collected to date. The process in curating and collecting has changed a bit since I've started. I still browse the internet but more selectively. Way less Spotify, a decent amount of YouTube and curated content, but a huge chunk of in-person digging and discogs deep dives. With this slightly updated process of music discovery, I've found myself revelling in underground Deep House legends like Chris Brann, Olivier Portal (RIP), and Souldoubt. These gentlemen all brought something to the table with their sound that is unique and distinct but still unanimously deep, soulful, and human. Other artists included in this mix that defined this era include Scott Grooves, DJ Deep, and Nathaniel X to name a few. The title of this mix is an homage to Chris Brann's No Room For Form. As someone who has publicly mentioned he finds House music too easy to create, he creates lush and ethereal yet vastly complex soundscapes that feel like you're listening to music from Jupiter. House (and a lot of electronic music) normally is very structured with its 4-4 time signature and standard progressions. Brann is different. He loves to maximize the space in the room with offworld synthesizers and electronics but roots you back on the ground with his fusion of danceable rhythms, lush melodies, and effortless chords — a true blend of heaven and earth. It's still House but subtly breaks down the unspoken rules of standard structure. I'm not entirely sure my mix does any of that but I can proudly say I tossed out normal convention with this one — no FX (for now), rough-around-the-edges mixing, and an overtly-long run time. There is room for form when creating a mix with music that is so normally structured. I'm excited to be back putting up mixes, posting again, and playing live more often. Thank you guys for the support over the years, it's been truly special. Hope you enjoy. — Chris If you wish to download the mix or support me, check out my Ko-fi page: https://ko-fi.com/chrissedayao Follow me on Instagram @chrissedayao Tracklist: Scott Grooves feat.
