I went into this knowing almost nothing except that people were calling it everything from romantasy to gothic horror, and that a lot of readers felt it was wildly mismarketed and lacking content warnings for some very dark material. As someone who reads a lot of fantasy and horror, and who strongly believes in the value of content warnings, I wanted to see what this book actually is, and whether the backlash makes sense. In this video, I’m sharing my honest thoughts, mostly spoiler-free but with a few clearly marked and easily skippable full spoiler sections (scroll down for the chapters to skip the spoilers easily!) I’ll be talking about the writing, the pacing, the characters, the themes (or lack thereof), and of course, I'll also talk about: the genre confusion around this book, whether it feels like romantasy, horror, or something else, the controversy around content warnings, and who is actually responsible for how a book is marketed.
