Mosquito Lagoon threw everything at us to start the day—upper 40-degree temperatures, ultra-low water, and crystal-clear conditions that left very little room for error. But with the help of a longtime local guide and years of experience on this fishery, we focused on the subtle depressions and shallow pockets where cold-weather redfish tend to group up. When you find them in these conditions, the action can get exciting in a hurry. We relied on small hard baits, shrimp-imitating lures, light 16-pound leader, and weedless setups to stay effective in the shallow grass. The strategy paid off with plenty of aggressive redfish, and Mosquito Lagoon even surprised us with a quality trout mixed right in with the schools of reds—one of those moments that makes this place so special.
