For 1,224 years, a book has survived. Three anonymous scribes made it on a small Atlantic island, using the prepared skins of 185 calves and pigment ground from stone carried three thousand miles. Then the island burned. Sixty-eight monks died defending the book. The survivor who carried it out was never named. Two centuries later, the book was buried in a field; the monk who recovered it was never named either.
