Neo Gothic Winter Gardens in Margate, Kent.

The Winter gardens in Margate, Kent was built in 1911. Built in a neo-gothic style it has seen many famous faces over the years including Dame Vera Lynn, Laurel & Hardy, Status Quo and the Beatles. During World War II it was used as a receiving station for over 46,000 troops that landed at Margate following the evacuation of Dunkirk. It couldn't be used as a theatre during this time as Thanet was designated a restricted area due to its potential for invasion. Though damaged by bombing during the war, it was officially re-opened in 1946. Sadly in August of 2022, the Winter Gardens closed its doors to the public for 'a period of time' following a halt of its bookings. The Theatre has remained closed since and its future is still uncertain. While it's future is uncertain, there is a huge demand for the theatre to remain as such. There are those that fear it will be sold off to developers which would see the end of its over 100 year reign. -------------------------------------------- Sounds & music provided by MOVAVI Contact: [email protected] --------------------------------------------
