Warfare is inherent to the culture of the Iron Age Astures. It so profoundly shaped their society, architecture, material culture, and religion that these societies cannot be understood without considering this factor. We will discuss hill forts, defensive systems, warriors and their weaponry, armed horsemen depicted on gold jewelry, and gods to whom horses, goats, and prisoners of war were sacrificed. Rome did not encounter unarmed peoples when it arrived in the north of the Iberian Peninsula, and it took them ten years to subdue the Cantabrians and Astures, while Caesar had conquered all of Gaul in practically the same period.
