It perfectly captures the feeling of being an outcast (at least in one's own mind) assigned unpleasant tasks and instinctively aware that you've lost your comrades and are powerless to win them back, no matter how hard you try. Charisma is a divine gift, and ultimately, some people have it and others don't. I loved the sheer tragedy of Barrow, a former Japanese prisoner of war and a truly remarkable man whose personal life was in ruins and who clearly couldn't even win the symbolic loyalty of most of his officers. An astonishing achievement that deserves far more than the semi-obscurity it has fallen into.
