Grade 1 ELA: Text Features Non Fiction RI 1.1, RI 1.5

This English Language Arts Common Core video features first grade students from Milton Terrace North Middle School located in Ballston Spa, New York. This lesson demonstrates Focus Standard RI 1.1: Ask and answer key details in a text and Focus Standard RI 1.5: Know and use various text features (e.g., headings, tables, contents, glossaries, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts for information in a text. The students in this video are able to identify characteristics of a non-fiction text and recognize the differences between non-fiction and fiction texts. They also use the text features (heading, glossary) to help them gain deeper understanding of the informational text.
