The Sickle - My Favorite Farm Tool

On this edition of My Favorite Farm Tool, I talk to you about the original “weed eater”—the sickle, which can be used to mow grass for hay, grain, or just to keep the grass or weeds down on the small farm or homestead. Now the scythe is and implement of shearing, the swing blade is an instrument of whacking, but the sickle is an instrument of both shearing AND whacking. Tall grass can be held with your free hand and the sickle is pulled in a gentle motion toward you to shear the grass. With this calmer motion you avoid cutting your hand as it’s kept above and away from the blade while holding the grass. When used with whacking motions, it’s very handy to have a homemade stick that holds the top of the grass in place, aids in moving loose cut grass out of the way, and most importantly—keeps you from accidentally hitting your hand with the blade.
