Swamy Nambi is one of the very few devotees with whom the Lord Himself conversed regularly. Swami Thirukkachchi nambi appeared in a place called poo irunda valli (poonamallee, Chennai) in Maasi Mrigasira Nakshatra. Swamy moved to kAnchIpuram, and started performing devotional service to LORD Varadaraja at Kancheepuram temple. His unique service was to fan the Lord of Kanchi, Swami Varadaraja everyday. While doing the fanning service (thiru-Ala-vatta Kainkaryam), Lord Varadaraja used to converse with nambi. This was due to his supreme devotion to Lord Varadaraja, his being devoid of any ego & his being a true servant of the Lord, wanting no other thing but service to the Lord. One incident in his life is used to show how much Lord cared for him. One morning, after the holy rituals were completed in the temple, everyone left as usual. Lord Varadaraja & nambi were immersed on some interesting topic. Suddenly , It began to rain very heavily. Suddenly, an aged Sri Vaishnava person appeared with an umbrella & told nambi that Lord Varadaraja had instructed him to accompany him to his home with the umbrella & bring him back. Evening came & nambi was delayed a little bit in starting for the temple. When priests entered the sanctum, they were shocked as the Lord was not there in the temple! They were much worried & were waiting for nambi to come back. After sometime, nambi came along with the Sri Vaishnava. Nambi went to the usual place of Lord & found Lord was there with a satisfied look on His lotus face! When the priests went near the Lord, they saw water droplets on Him! Everyone now realized what had happened. During his last days, Nambhi offers obeisances & requests Perumal to grant him liberation as he is not of any use to Lord with his physical body. Lord Varadaraja Perumal smiles and replies My dear Nambi !! granting Moksham needs “Bhaagavatha Sambhandham”. Nambi decides to “earn” some Bhaagavatha Abhimaanam by serving pure devotees. He takes permission from Lord Varadaraja and proceeds to the home of the great Acharya Thirukostiyur Nambhi at Thirukoshtiyur a place near to Madurai. Thirukachi Nambhigal under the guise of a common peasant meets some of his disciples & introduces himself as Gajendra Dasan and requests for some small work at their ashram. Unaware that he was Tirukkachi Nambi, Thirukostiyur Nambi asks his disciples to engage him to take care of his cows and bullocks in the Goshala. Always in the mood of serving Lord Varadaraja he takes up the new service of go seva. Thirukachi Nambhigal was relieved & happy that he has had got an opportunity to serve a great Acharya. One rainy day, Thirukostiyur Nambhi observed that Gajendra dasa has covered the cows with his own clothes for protection. He identified, Thirukachi Nambi was serving him in disguise. That's how Thirukachi nambi got "Bhagavatha Sambandham" as advised by the Lord.
