Japan is a great country. I'm honestly glad to be born Japanese. I've lost both my wallet and my cell phone, but both times I was able to turn them in unharmed at the police station. I think this country is truly wonderful, where so many people feel a strong desire to help the owner, knowing they may be in trouble, rather than feeling like they want to steal money from the wallet or that it's a hassle to go to the police station. I hope that someday I will find something and return it to them without any hassle, thereby continuing this spirit of kindness. However, while I'm quick to return a cell phone or wallet, I have a hard time deciding what to do with lost items that make me think, "Hmm, which one is it!?" What should I do when I find something that looks nice, like a towel or a paperback book, or something that some people wouldn't even bother looking for? If we turned everything in to the police station, police stations would become a "garbage dump." That would probably interfere with the police's main job.
