I finally thought about making lepet. This old-school, rustic snack tastes amazing, deliciously savory, and addictive. It beats city food, in my opinion. My mom happened to be home, so I asked her to teach me how to make lepet casings. I was a little discouraged at first, as it was quite difficult. But after much trial and error, I finally succeeded in making my mom's version of skewer-less lepet casings. Thank God. I was happy. Even happier when I tasted the finished product. MasyaAllah, it was delicious, soft, dense, and just the right amount of salty and savory. I almost ate 4 pieces in no time, haha... Hungry or craving? Okay, for those of you who are curious and want to try making it, here's the recipe. I hope you find it successful and helpful. Thank you! INGREDIENTS 500 g Glutinous Rice 50 g or about 1 handful of regular rice, optional [This provides a denser texture] 200 g or about 1/2 a large coconut, de-husked and grated 150 g of tolo beans (or red beans, optional) 4 tsp or about 1 ¾ tbsp of salt Sufficient coconut leaves for wrapping and raffia string or twine for tying Note: If using a pressure cooker, boil for 45 minutes. One recipe makes about 44 pieces, each weighing about 40 to 50 grams. The selling price should be determined based on your capital and market share in your area. In our hometown, in a remote part of South Lampung, our neighbors can still sell one piece of lepet for Rp. 1000 [minus the Tolo Beans]. Because the price of coconuts in our village is only around Rp. 2500 to Rp. 3000, often free because you can just pick them from the tree behind the house. Likewise, the rice is relatively cheap, because it's harvested yourself, even if you buy it per kilogram, it's around Rp. 11,000 to Rp. 12,000. And the young coconuts are also free, just climb the garden or ask from neighbors, hehe. But in Madiun, East Java, my husband's village, if 1 lepet costs Rp. 1000, you're not making a profit, but a loss. Because 1 coconut here costs Rp. 8,000 to Rp. 10,000. For 10 young coconuts, they're also priced at Rp. 4,000 to Rp. 7,000. Likewise, the sticky rice has to be bought at the grocery store, which costs around Rp. 14,000 per kilogram. So, considering the relatively high initial investment, the ideal selling price for one lepet in Madiun is Rp. 2,000 to Rp. 2,500 per piece.
