Since the 1970s, they have been selectively bred in France as part of a collective plan to improve the quality of its dairy products. There are over 450,000 animals, 159,000 of which are under milk recording, and of these, 41,500 females have been artificially inseminated. In Europe, the vast majority of domesticated goats are of this breed and are widely distributed throughout the continent. France has 9.5% of the European herd, after Greece, Spain, and Romania.
