FAZENDA SÃO JOÃO DO PENEDO Areal - RJ #fazenda146 1845 The Fazenda São João do Penedo began to be formed around 1845 by José Antônio de Castilhos, initially only under the name "Fazenda do Penedo". At the time, its lands were part of the Parish of São José do Rio Preto, municipality of Paraíba do Sul. With the creation of the Parish of Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Bemposta in 1855, Fazenda Penedo became part of this jurisdiction. Commander José Antônio de Castilhos was married to Dona Ana Cândida Barbosa, granddaughter of Francisco Gonçalves Teixeira and Ana Mariana Barbosa Matos, pioneers in the Paraíba do Sul region. The couple had four children: Dr. Leandro de Castilhos; Maria Cândida de Castilhos Teixeira, who married her cousin, Francisco Barbosa Teixeira; Captain José Antônio Barbosa de Castilhos, married to Ana Werneck; and Anna Cândida de Castilhos Gama, who was married to Belarmino Luís de Carvalho Gama. Dona Ana Cândida Barbosa died in 1860 and her husband, Commander José Antônio de Castilhos, on December 14, 1883, both at the Penedo Farm. Comparing the two post-mortem inventory processes of the couple, we can conclude that the Penedo Farm was, for much of the 19th century, a small farm. In the 1860 inventory, the farm had 145,000 coffee plants and 124 slaves (FRAGOSO, 1983). In 1883, the number of coffee plants had been reduced to 100,000, and the number of slaves to 107 individuals. The couple did not only own this farm; there was also the Santa Clara Farm, located on the banks of the Piabanha River, next to Penedo, probably inherited by their son José Antônio Barbosa de Castilhos, in addition to two others, located in the Parish of Santo Antônio da Encruzilhada, Mato Alegre and Floresta, both with coffee plantations and coffee production units. In the Court of Rio de Janeiro, the Castilhos had a good small farm, located on Rua Conde de Bonfim, Parish of Engenho Velho. In the 1883 inventory, we gathered the following description of the headquarters of the Penedo Farm: “(...) a house with stone and lime walls up to the base, lined with glass in the front, a chapel next to the same veranda, a living room, a dining room, ten bedrooms and alcoves, two interior rooms, two corridors, a pantry, a kitchen, the whole house having one hundred and twenty-four palms in front, sixty-one in width, one hundred and sixty-four and a half in depth and twenty-a-half in height, an addition attached to this same house made of wattle and daub and laths, covered with tiles, lined and floored, the said addition consisting of a room for sleeping slaves and a room next to it; having in total one hundred and nine palms in front, twenty-two and a half in width; and one hundred and nine in depth, all with twenty-a-half palms in height, another section following this one and looking towards the The inner courtyard of the house consisted of a hall and a floored room, I say, the hall being floored, having fifty-three and a half palms in front of the courtyard, twenty-seven and a half said in width and fifty-three and a half palms in height, (...)” “(...)The entire facade at the back by a stone and lime wall, and one of clay, and a coffee washing area, all for 24:000#000 (...)”. In addition to the main house (completed in 1854), the farm also had a house for infirmary, barn, warehouse for granaries, house for employees, house with granaries, slave quarters with verandas, sheds, mill, mill for processing coffee with a veranda at the back, two wooden houses and a house with a lookout at the entrance gate. In 1883, the farm's lands had the following configuration: 863 fathoms of frontage bordering Valeriano José do Valle, ¼ of a league in depth bordering José Antônio Barbosa de Castilhos and Antônio Manoel Pinto de Souza, as well as 135 fathoms of frontage and 1,200 fathoms in depth bordering Carlos José Mendes. In 1920, the Penedo and Santa Clara farms belonged to Manoel Henrique Silva, and in 1935, to Domingos Saiol. Currently, the farm is known as "São João do Penedo".
