Built in the late Edo period, this residence was the home of the Kurosawa family, who served as hereditary village headmen and chief representatives, and boasts a grandeur and scale unexpected in such a remote mountainous region. The sight of countless stones placed on top of the extremely rare chestnut wood roof conveys the mountain village culture nurtured in the harsh natural environment of Ueno Village. The south side, with its three entrances—the main entrance, the village entrance, and the formal entrance—is magnificent, and the formal entrance, known as "Oshirasu," is particularly striking. It suggests that the Kurosawa family were not merely farmers, but central figures in local administration and village governance. Furthermore, in this remote village with almost no flat land, the only industries were sericulture, papermaking, and weaving. The bustling scene of the house, employing many servants, can be seen in the enormous space on the second floor, large enough to accommodate a tennis court. The surrounding Mount Osutaka, while providing abundant forest resources, also imposed a harsh lifestyle on the people. However, the people of this land have lived in harmony with the mountains, building their own unique culture and way of life. Nearby is a memorial park for the Japan Airlines Flight 123 crash that occurred on August 12, 1985. Many people will recall that day when they hear the name Mount Osutaka. Visiting the memorial park on the way back, one can understand the profound significance of the dedicated search efforts of the people of Ueno Village. These mountains have been the site of continuous human activity since ancient times.
