How Iowa Veterans Are Fighting Hunger Across Rural Communities

Protein is one of the hardest items for food pantries to keep on their shelves, especially during the summer months when children are home from school. That's why the Deb & Jeff Hanson Foundation travels across Iowa delivering thousands of pounds of ground pork to local food pantries through its Commonground Iowa "Call for Hunger" program. In this episode of Still Serving Iowa Veterans, Carlene Hall and Darlene McMartin meet with Laura Korth, Executive Director of the Deb & Jeff Hanson Foundation, during a food delivery stop in Oakland, Iowa. Laura explains how the foundation supports rural communities through food donations, school meal programs, military family initiatives, and projects that serve veterans across Iowa. Topics include: • The Call for Hunger summer food pantry program • Why protein is so important for food pantries • Food insecurity in rural Iowa • Support for military children through Henry's Heroes • Purple Up shirts and other youth programs • Veteran appreciation hats • How the Deb & Jeff Hanson Foundation serves communities statewide Still Serving Iowa Veterans is made possible by the Iowa Veterans Foundation and our sponsors who help us share the stories of those who served.
