【奄美群島 折り畳み自転車の旅】戦艦大和の慰霊塔へ (5) 奄美大島~徳之島、徳之島の南側 from Amami Island to Tokunoshima Island 2026年2月22日(日)
From February 18th (Wed) to March 2nd (Mon), 2026, I traveled around the Amami Islands and Naha, Okinawa, for 12 nights and 13 days. This video covers my trip on February 22nd (Sun), the 5th day of my trip, where I took a ferry from Naze Port on Amami Oshima to Kametoku Port on Tokunoshima and toured the southern half of the island (I used a folding bicycle from in front of the Isen Town Hall to the airport, and buses for the rest of the journey). The Naze Port Passenger Waiting Area (Passenger Terminal) where I boarded the ferry was completed in 1975 (Showa 50), and is currently undergoing construction to replace it due to aging infrastructure. The new terminal building was completed in February and was opened to the press on February 6th. Further improvements, such as a rotary for pick-up and drop-off vehicles, will be made, and it is scheduled to open for use within fiscal year 2026. [Overview of Tokunoshima Island] Tokunoshima is the second largest island in the Amami Islands after Amami Oshima, with an area of 248 km² and a circumference of 89 km. It ranks 11th among Japanese islands (including Okinawa Island, excluding the Northern Territories, which are not under effective control). Its area is approximately 3.8 times that of the area within the Yamanote Line in Tokyo, and in the Ryukyu Islands, it is second only to Iriomote Island (290 km²) and larger than Ishigaki Island (222 km²). The island features well-developed limestone karst topography, showcasing unique landscapes such as natural sea caves and wave-eroded terraces. Known as a treasure trove of rare endemic species, it was registered as a World Natural Heritage site in 2021, along with Amami Oshima, northern Okinawa Island, and Iriomote Island, in recognition of its biodiversity. The most recent estimated population is 20,709 (as of July 1, 2025). Due to its warm climate and food culture, it is renowned as an "island of longevity." It is also famous as the "Island of Fertility" and the "Island of Bonds," and boasts a high total fertility rate. The main industries are agriculture, including sugarcane, potatoes, and fruit trees, as well as coastal fishing. Following the Satsuma invasion of Ryukyu, it became a direct territory of the Satsuma Domain in 1610 (nominally part of Ryukyu). In July 1862, Saigo Takamori was exiled there, staying in a private home for about two months before being transferred to Okinoerabu Island, an even harsher place of exile. After the war, it was placed under US military rule, but on December 25, 1953, it was returned to Japanese sovereignty.
