She served primarily in the Atlantic during and after World War I, then operated extensively in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets during the interwar period. Modernized between 1929 and 1931 with improved armor, fire control, and other upgrades, she transferred to the Pacific Fleet and was based at Pearl Harbor by 1940. On the morning of December 7, 1941, while moored in Battleship Row, Arizona was struck by several Japanese bombs during the surprise attack. One armor-piercing bomb penetrated near her forward turrets and detonated the forward ammunition magazines in a catastrophic explosion that ripped the ship apart, killing 1,177 of her crew—the greatest loss of life on any single vessel that day. Too badly damaged to salvage for combat, her wreck remains in Pearl Harbor as a solemn war grave and the centerpiece of the USS Arizona Memorial, where oil still occasionally seeps from her hull as a lasting reminder of that tragic day.
