When disaster struck Madhya Pradesh in 2021, and rising waters cut off villages from all sides, one Indian Air Force helicopter pierced through the storm. At its controls was Wing Commander Deepika Misra — the first woman in the IAF’s history to be honoured with the Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry). In this month's Women in Defence series, she recounts what it took to face the fury of nature — deteriorating weather, fading light, and the weight of lives waiting to be saved. Over eight grueling days, she carried out daring low-hover pick-ups and winching operations that rescued 47 people, including women and children, from the floodwaters.
