Crawford Castle- A Medieval Tale
The ruins of Crawford Castle, also known as Tower Lindsay stand on the banks of the river Clyde in upper Clydesdale where the valley narrows into what is known as The Mennock Pass. The pass was an important supply route between Scotland and England and has been used since times of old. The earthworks of the castle date to 12th century and this is where the Lindsay Family, Earls of Crawford take their name. The castle was stormed and taken by William Wallace and his band of men and burned while occupied by English soldiers. You will hear me refer to the Crawfords in the film because this is what the castle is commonly known as. The Lindsay family inherited half the barony of the land of Crawford. The name Crawford is said to derive from 11th century Thorlongus of the Merse, overlord of Crawford who took the name Crawford and built the motte and Bailey fort there. In Wallace’s time is was likely referred to as Tower Lindsay. It is a fabulous old ruined castle to visit in what is now a tranquil valley which would have been a place of tension during the Scottish Wars of Independence when Wallace spearheaded insurrection in the south.
