The truth about aches and pains - Regional Interdependence Overview
http://www.FoundationPTSA.com Check out our other videos for more tips. If you feel pain, stop. Video Transcription: Welcome back to Foundation Physical Therapy’s YouTube Channel. Today we’re going to go over something called Regional Interdependence Model or The Regional Interdependence Model. My name is Christian Compean I’m a fellowship trained physical therapist specializing in orthopedics. Regional Interdependence is basically the system of the body working together where you have a segment of stability bracketed by two segments of mobility and it interlocks or it interchanges all the way up the chain. So what that means is your foot was built for stability, your was built for mobility, your knee was built for stability, your hip was built for mobility and then we come around to the back. The lumbar spine should be stable, the thoracic spine should be mobile, your shoulder blade should be stable, the shoulder itself the glenohumeral joint should be mobile and then it just keeps going down the chain and up into the neck. The reason this is important is this is basically how we look at the body. If there’s a dysfunction somewhere, chances are there’s a dysfunction in a neighboring segment. For instance people that come in with medial knee pain or runners knee or patellar tendonitis whatever you want to call it, a lot of times the knee is a victim and it’s not necessarily what’s at fault. The problem can be that there is stiffness in the hip and the hip doesn’t do what it’s supposed to in your squat mechanics or there’s a lot of hypomobility or stiffness at the ankle and the ankle is not allowing you to do what you’re supposed to while your foot is on the floor so this knee can get shifted to the inside it can get shifted to the front and it can really load the patellar tendon. So regional interdependence is very much the same thing as the whole the neck bones connected to the shoulder bone and kind of all the way down. Or it’s thinking of upstream and downstream thinking where you’re saying if the problem if you think the problem is here you really got to look at the neighboring segments to make sure that the problematic area in your body doesn’t have a bad neighbor. So we’re going to be doing a lot of videos on regional interdependence to really put together concepts with the exercises that we’ve done in the past. So that’s just a quick little video on what the underlying thought process is in a lot of these and we’re going to go into more detail body part by body part or region by region. So if this is information that’s going to be valuable to you I would subscribe to the channel. Like this and share with anybody you think might benefit from this. Hope you enjoy.
