Ghibli Park, located in the Expo Commemorative Park in Nagakute City, Aichi Prefecture, will open on November 1st. We bring you a detailed report from the preview held on October 12th. First up is Dondoko Mori, one of three areas opening early on the 1st of next month. "My Neighbor Totoro" is a classic film about two sisters, Satsuki and Mei, who move to the countryside and interact with Totoro, a creature said to only be seen by children. Located in Dondoko Mori is Satsuki and Mei's house, recreated for the 2005 Aichi Expo. This is the origin of Ghibli Park, connecting Aichi Prefecture, which is currently developing the park, with Ghibli works. "A bucket with a hole in it!" Maybe if we look through the hole in the bucket like Mei-chan, we'll find an acorn! "Oh, an acorn! There really is an acorn! I found an acorn! Oh, an acorn! Wow, there really are tons of acorns here!" There were lots of Totoro's forgotten belongings! And then, as we climbed the walking path toward the top of the mountain behind "Satsuki and Mei's House," we... "It's so cute, and it's so big!" This is "Dondoko-do," a wooden playground shaped like Totoro, about 5 meters tall! Only children up to elementary school age are allowed inside. From inside "Dondoko-do," a view only children can see unfolds... I wonder what kind of Ghibli worldview we'll be able to experience. And at the "Dondoko Shop" at the top, you can find limited-edition goods you can only buy here! Items include amulet bags featuring designs of the "Forest Spirit" from Princess Mononoke, and Sanshu tile netsuke (simple ornaments) with a motif of the bell from "Little Totoro." Among the items, there was this... "It's a Totoro rake. It would look gorgeous in your home." ...It costs 25,300 yen. This "Dondoko Forest" area is a little far from the other two early-opening areas, about a 20-minute walk away, so you can get there by taking the free bus that runs through the park. Next is the "Hill of Youth" area. ■ "Whisper of the Heart" Fans Are Excited "Whisper of the Heart" depicts the youth of a book-loving girl and a boy who aspires to be a violin maker. "Ah, it's Chikyu-ya!" Here, the antique shop "Chikyu-ya" that appeared in the film has been faithfully recreated. "Oh, there's Seiji Amasawa's bicycle... Wow! Even Seiji's jacket. I'm going to call Shizuku this. I love this series so much that it's not an exaggeration to say that Seiji Amasawa was my first love. Can I call it? I'm getting excited!" Now that I'm feeling all excited, I head inside! "There's Baron!" The Baron the cat figurine even has an intricately crafted, enigmatic sparkle in its eyes. "Look at the 8 o'clock dial. The princess has appeared!" The mechanical clock that appears in the series ticks every 30 minutes, so if you time it right, you can see it ticking. It really immerses you in the world of the series. And then, as I go down the stairs... "This is Seiji Amasawa's violin workshop." The violin workshop depicted in "Whisper of the Heart" has also been recreated. Seeing the wood shavings on the workshop floor makes you feel as if Amasawa was there just moments before... And you can even touch the violins on display! "It's like walking into someone's room without permission, and it makes your heart race!" ■A "treasure" stored somewhere! Announcer Furukawa, a huge fan of "Whisper of the Heart," asked a staff member! "Do you have any rough emeralds?" To which he replied... "They appear in important scenes, don't they? They're rough emeralds!" What a question! The rough emeralds that cheered up the main character, Shizuku. In fact, when we asked a staff member on-site, he told us that you can see a real rough emerald up close! They're carefully stored somewhere in "Chikyu-ya," and this information could be considered an exclusive scoop. And right next to Chikyu-ya is a replica of the "Cat's Office" from "The Cat Returns," a film related to "Whisper of the Heart"! "Oh, Baron's drinking tea." The office is truly "cat-sized." Looking inside through the window, you'll be amazed by the intricate craftsmanship of the furniture and other items... The full details of Ghibli Park have been revealed. Admission is by reservation, with different prices for each area. The park is scheduled to open on the 1st of next month.
