The Director General of the Civil Guard, María Gámez, has resigned from the Armed Forces, a position she assumed in January 2020, during Pedro Sánchez's second term as Prime Minister. The reason, she stated, is the indictment of her husband in an alleged corruption case linked to the ERE (Employment Regulation Act). Minister Grande Marlaska believes María Gámez's resignation is an example of decency. The PP is not convinced and will request the minister's appearance in Congress. According to sources close to the Civil Guard, the current Government Delegate in Madrid, Mercedes González, will assume the position of Director of the Civil Guard. The resignation coincides with judicial investigations into alleged irregularities in construction projects at 13 command posts and with the "Mediador case," affecting two retired generals, Pedro Vázquez Jarava and Francisco Espinosa Navas, the latter of whom is in prison for bribery schemes in which former Socialist MP Juan Bernardo Fuentes Curbelo, alias "Tito Berni," is also accused. María Gámez replaced Félix Azón as head of the Civil Guard in January 2020, both under Fernando Grande-Marlaska as Minister of the Interior.
