This episode of "Exploring Japanese Villages" features a video of the former Onataka settlement in Ōshika Village, Shimoina District, Nagano Prefecture. The settlement is characterized by houses scattered over a wide area along the Onataka Stream, a tributary of the Kashio River. It is probably the largest abandoned village in southern Shinshu. And, most notably, this settlement is home to numerous abandoned vehicles. When Murakage visited in 2013, there was one house still inhabited, but currently, no one lives there; it is uninhabited. The site retains various buildings and abandoned vehicles, including abandoned houses, vehicles, a shrine, a temple, a cemetery, and roads within the settlement, offering a glimpse into the lives of the villagers at the time. Due to the considerable size of this abandoned village, the filming time was quite long, and the video series continues in nine parts. Part 4 covers the ancient shrine and cemetery in the settlement, as well as bear traps left behind at the site of buildings. The shrine is located south of the settlement, and since a torii gate symbol is shown on an old map from the 1940s, it is believed to have been in the settlement since at least the early Showa period. Near the shrine, there were traces of a cemetery. Since it was relocated in 1994, it is likely that graves were located there before then. Along the paved road, there were building remains, and old bear traps and farming tools were left behind. The bear traps were quite old and were found to have been made in the former Mizukubo town of Shizuoka Prefecture. There was also a bird's nest lying on the ground; it might have been the first time I'd seen a bird's nest so close up. Now, please enjoy Part 4 of the Onnagaoka settlement.
