The Hidden Family That Built Mumbai's Most Iconic Buildings - And Owns Tata

If you have ever seen the Reserve Bank of India building in Mumbai, you have seen their work. If you have walked into the Taj Mahal Hotel, you have walked through their construction. If you have stood outside the Bombay Stock Exchange, you have stood in front of something they built. The Shapoorji Pallonji family has been constructing India's most recognisable buildings for 160 years. And almost nobody knows their name. Shapoorji Pallonji & Co was founded in 1865 — eleven years before the phone was invented, twenty years before the Indian National Congress. The Mistry family, a Parsi dynasty from Mumbai, built the firm into India's premier construction company. The RBI. The BSE. The Taj Mahal Hotel's iconic wings. The Brabourne Stadium. The Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank building. The Sultan of Oman's palace. And while they were building the country's skyline, they were quietly doing something else — buying shares in Tata Sons, piece by piece, until they owned 18.4% of the holding company that controls the most trusted brand in India. What you'll find out in this episode: → 160 years of building India. Shapoorji Pallonji & Co has constructed landmarks across India and the Gulf that most Indians have seen in photographs, visited on school trips, or walk past every day without knowing who built them. The firm's construction portfolio is the most visible thing the Mistry family owns and the least discussed. The episode traces the buildings before the boardroom — because understanding what the family built is what makes the Tata stake make sense. → The Tata stake — how an outsider became Tata's biggest outside partner. The Mistry family's accumulation of Tata Sons shares happened over decades, quietly, without announcement. By the time the stake reached 18.4%, the SP Group was Tata Sons' single largest shareholder after the Tata Trusts themselves. They had no board seat for most of this period. They were not operating the business. They were simply the largest outside holder of the most powerful unlisted company in India — a position nobody in the press wrote about until it became relevant. → The Phantom of Bombay House. Pallonji Shapoorji Mistry — the patriarch who led the SP Group through its peak years — was almost never photographed. He took UK citizenship while building most of his wealth in India. He was once calculated to be Britain's richest person of Indian origin. He was called "the Phantom of Bombay House" by those who knew what he owned but had never seen his face. He was the opposite of every modern billionaire — a man whose entire strategy was invisibility. → Cyrus Mistry becomes Tata chairman. In 2012, Pallonji's younger son Cyrus Mistry was appointed chairman of Tata Sons — the first non-Tata family member to hold the position in the company's history. For a family that had spent decades as a silent outside shareholder, this was the moment of maximum influence. Cyrus was seen as a capable, reform-minded operator. He lasted four years. → The boardroom coup and the legal war that followed. In October 2016, Cyrus Mistry was removed from the Tata Sons chairmanship in a meeting he did not anticipate. What followed was the most bitter corporate legal battle in Indian history — four years of counter-allegations, leaked letters, Supreme Court hearings, and a fight over the fundamental question of minority shareholder rights inside India's most trusted conglomerate. In 2021, the Supreme Court ruled in Tata's favour. The stake remained frozen. The exit question was never answered. → Two deaths in 2022 — and what the family faces now. In June 2022, Pallonji Mistry died. Three months later, in September 2022, Cyrus Mistry died in a road accident on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway. He was 54. The SP Group — carrying significant debt, holding a frozen Tata stake worth over ₹1.5 lakh crore with no clear exit path — is now run by Shapoor Mistry, Pallonji's elder son. The Phantom is gone. The stake remains. The question of what India's most private dynasty does next has no public answer. India's Richest is your front row seat to the Game of Thrones of India's wealthiest families.
