By the dawn, 2. by the tenth night, 3. by the even and the odd, 4. by the night when it passes. Interpretation of VERSE 1 Allah swears by dawn. The dawn referred to is the dawn of Yaumun-Nahr (the day of sacrifice), which is the 10th of Zulhijjah, because the following verse refers to the "ten nights," the first ten days of that month. However, some argue that the dawn referred to is the daily dawn that begins to break, signaling the end of night and the beginning of day. Others argue that it is the dawn of 1 Muharram, the beginning of the year, or the dawn of 1 Zulhijjah, the month of the Hajj. Tafsir VERSE 2 Next, Allah swears by the "ten nights." What is meant is the first ten days of the month of Zulhijah, which are days that are highly honored for doing good deeds on those days, as informed by the following hadith of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: The Messenger of Allah ...
