"Gouge Away" is a song by Pixies from their 1989 album "Doolittle", an absolute masterpiece. Like many songs on this record, "Gouge Away" is inspired by a Biblical story; in this case, it's the story of Samson and Delilah. Samson was a guy who had his strength in his hair. His lover Delilah betrayed him and ordered a servant to cut his hair while he was sleeping and turned him over to his enemies. They gouged out his eyes and chained him to two pillars in their stronghold. He pulled the pillars down, bringing the building down and killing himself and his enemies. You can find a lot of references to the story in the song's lyrics below. Musically, "Gouge Away" is a text-book sample of the soft/loud/soft dynamics which Pixies were notable for. Later the formula was adopted by Nirvana for "Nevermind". Pixies drummer David Lovering said: "It's the perfect example of a true Pixies song. It's got the quiet verse and then it goes all-out for the chorus. The way it's structured, it's two opposing layers. I remember when we recorded it, I thought it was the most compelling thing we ever did." And the bassline plays a huge part in this because the bass is mostly responsible for the quiet parts of the song. "Gouge Away" bassline is simple but effective, miss Kim Deal at her best.
