Welcome to Osnabrück, a historic city in Lower Saxony, northwest Germany. Osnabrück is known as the City of Peace — a place where diplomats once helped end one of Europe’s great wars and where culture, history, and nature meet. Osnabrück’s history goes back over a thousand years. It was founded around 785 when Charlemagne created a bishopric here. The city officially became a chartered town in 1171, later joining the Hanseatic League — an important medieval trading network. Most famously, Osnabrück played a key role in the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, helping bring an end to the Thirty Years’ War — one of Europe’s longest and deadliest conflicts.
