Taking care of another being is an excellent way to learn empathy, sensitivity and responsibility. When should you let your child have a pet? Before saying "Yes" to that cute little puppy or kitten coming into your home and becoming a part of your family, perhaps you should have a serious conversation with your child. Otherwise, YOU will be the one scraping up poop, scrubbing pee, getting up in the morning to let the dog or cat out, and cleaning up the mess young animals make while shedding, teething, or simply wanting to run and play in the house. Let an animal friend be a means of teaching your child responsibility for taking care of another life.
