For clarity, we'll use the skull and mark all structures on our diagram. This video will be useful for absolutely all medical students studying anatomy, as well as those who need to expand their knowledge of topographic anatomy, neurology, neurosurgery, and angiology. The internal base of the skull is divided into three cranial fossae: anterior, middle, and posterior. All three fossae are arranged in a cascade. The anterior cranial fossa (fossa cranii anterior) is bounded anteriorly and laterally by the squama of the frontal bone, and posteriorly by the posterior borders of the body and lesser wings of the sphenoid bone. The middle cranial fossa (fossa cranii media) is deeper and wider than the anterior cranial fossa. Its anterior border runs along the posterior edge of the lesser wing of the sphenoid bone. Posteriorly, the middle cranial fossa is bounded by the dorsum sella turcica (center) and the superior edge of the petrous temporal bone on each side. Laterally, it is bounded by the squamous part of the temporal bone, the parietal bone, and the greater wing of the sphenoid bone. The posterior cranial fossa (fossa cranii posterior) is the largest and deepest. Anteriorly, along the midline, it is bounded by the dorsum sella turcica and the clivus, anteriorly and laterally by the superior edge of the petrous temporal bone, posteriorly by the squamous part of the occipital bone, and posteriorly and laterally by a small portion of the parietal bone and the mammillary part of the temporal bone.
