For about 50 years (from 1937 to 1987), he carried the Sacred Tooth Relic Casket during the Esala Perahera—one of the grandest Buddhist processions in the country. 🐘 How Raja Came to the Temple Raja was gifted to the Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) in 1937 by Disawe of Mampitiya. Another elephant named Skanda was also gifted at the same time. Since then, Raja walked in every Esala Perahera, proudly bearing the sacred casket. 🧘‍♂️ His Dignified Character Raja was a calm, majestic, and disciplined elephant. He would never step forward in the procession until the ceremonial cloth ("pavada") was laid out. Sometimes, if the cloth was delayed, he would keep one foot raised in the air and wait patiently. 💥 A Moment of Crisis in 1959 During the 1959 elephant stampede at the Perahera under Diyawadana Nilame Nugawela, while other elephants panicked, Raja stood calmly with the sacred casket, unmoved and unshaken by the chaos. 🔔 His Unique Walk Raja had a slight imbalance in his right tusk, which was heavier than the left. As a result, he would often rest his trunk on the right tusk while walking—a signature trait recognized by many. 🩺 Medical Incidents In 1983, Raja had an ear injury and needed surgery. Vets were too afraid to approach him, so they asked Neranjan Wijeyeratne (acting Diyawadana Nilame at the time) to apply the medicine. Raja, who trusted him deeply, stayed still without panic. ⚡ Light Failure in 1992 During the 1992 Perahera, a power failure left the area in complete darkness. Still, Raja marched steadily through the dark, carrying the sacred relic without hesitation. 🛑 An Act of Wisdom Once, near Queen’s Hotel in Kandy, Raja suddenly stopped walking. Despite mahouts trying to move him, he refused. Later, they found that his harness had gotten tangled, and if he had moved forward, it could have damaged the casket. His decision to stop saved it. 💊 Clever Medicine Trick Raja hated taking medicine. To solve this, Nilame came up with an idea: hide the medicine inside a piece of bread and place it at a shop where Raja passed by. Raja figured it out after a few times and refused to eat from that shop again, showing how intelligent he was! 🚨 The Tragic Incident – January 1, 1987 At 4:00 AM on January 1st, Nilame received a call from the police. An elephant was seen running alone in the city. It was Raja, who had broken away after a vehicle accident involving another temple elephant. Raja ran back to the temple, stopping near the water tank by the shrine, exhausted. His body was bleeding. The elephant that died in the accident was thrown forward by the crash, and Raja’s hooves were injured by the rough road. He had returned home on his own. ⚰️ Final Days and Death After this, Raja’s health declined. He was unable to stand up one day while resting near the Nilame’s official residence. The President at the time, Ranasinghe Premadasa, sent help immediately. A crane was used to gently lift Raja. A shelter was built with coconut logs to support him. On July 16, 1988, at 10:15 AM, Raja passed away, surrounded by monks and temple caretakers. For over 50 years, he had served the Temple of the Tooth with loyalty and grace. 🏛️ Honored as a National Treasure President J.R. Jayewardene had declared Raja a National Treasure even before his death. After Raja passed, the government took full responsibility for preserving his body. Every part of his body was carefully measured and documented so an exact replica (taxidermy) could be made—something previously done for the famous Kenyan elephant "Ahmed." Since that medicine wasn’t available in Sri Lanka, President Premadasa arranged for two barrels of it to be flown in from Singapore overnight. 🗿 Raja's Memorial His taxidermy mount was placed in the Raja Museum near the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, where it remains today. The former Diyawadana Nilame, who took great care of Raja, even built a memorial at the burial site near his residence. Every year, he would offer flowers and alms in Raja's memory. 🙏 A Final Prayer Neranjan Wijeyeratne emotionally reflected: “No human being—not even a Nilame or Chief Monk—could serve the Sacred Tooth Relic so faithfully for 50 years. Raja did.
