This impressive alpine tour leads to the 3,472-meter Hinterer Seelenkogel, the second-highest summit in the Gurgl ridge of the Ötztal Alps. The ascent starts in Pfelders, a side valley of the upper Passeier Valley, and climbs to the Zwickauer Hut at 2,989 meters. Even the approach to the hut involves around 1300 meters of elevation gain, passing old mountain farmhouses and beautiful high alpine scenery. The Zwickauer Hut itself has a remarkable history: first built in 1899, later destroyed by fire and explosion, and eventually rebuilt in its present form. After atmospheric evening impressions, the next morning begins early with the ascent to Seelenkogel. Although the summit route is listed at about two hours, it requires sure-footedness, a head for heights, route-finding skills and the ability to handle easy scrambling sections. From the summit, an outstanding panorama opens across the Zillertal Alps, the Stubai Alps, the Wildspitze, the Schalfkogel, the Zufallspitzen and even toward the Ortler group. After the summit views, a long descent of around 1800 vertical meters leads back down.
