Python Magnetic Field Simulation: Designing X, Y, and Z Gradient Coils with Magpylib

Welcome back to our Python magnetic field simulation series! 🧲 In this tutorial, we are taking a step up from basic coils to design and simulate a full 3-axis gradient coil system (X, Y, and Z) using Python's magpylib library. Gradient coils are a crucial component in systems like MRI machines, and today we will build them completely from scratch! 💻🚀 🎯 What you will learn in this video: • Geometric Transformations: We define custom functions to translate, mirror, and rotate arrays to easily manipulate our 3D coordinates. • Creating XY Gradients: We design saddle-style coils for the X and Y gradients by connecting arcs and lines, and then arranging them symmetrically using our transformation functions. • Creating Z Gradients: We build the Z gradient using two circular coils separated by a specific distance, carrying opposite currents. • 3D Visualization: We use plotly.graph_objects to plot the physical 3D traces of all our gradient coils (color-coded for clarity) and magpylib.show to visualize the resulting magnetic fields. • Spatial Tree Filtering: We implement a cKDTree from scipy.spatial to calculate the shortest distance between grid points and the coils.
