In this video, you will learn the story of Delmiro Gouveia, one of the most impressive figures in Brazilian entrepreneurship and a true titan of the Northeast. A man who rose from extreme poverty, built an industrial empire in the backlands, brought electricity, roads, jobs, and development to forgotten regions of the country—and whose life was tragically cut short and remains shrouded in mystery to this day. Born in 1863 in the interior of Ceará, Delmiro faced the loss of his parents from a young age, early work, and the need to survive alone. While still young, he worked as a ticket seller, streetcar conductor, customs clerk, and traveling salesman, learning firsthand how commerce, import, and export worked. It was in this way that he distinguished himself as a leather and hide merchant, becoming known as the "King of Hides" in the Brazilian Northeast. His rise disturbed political and economic elites. In Recife, Delmiro created the Derby Market, an innovative enterprise that revolutionized local commerce, reduced prices, and changed the city's urban dynamics. The success was so great that it attracted powerful enemies, culminating in the arson attack on the market, political persecution, and the destruction of his businesses in the Pernambuco capital. Forced to start over, Delmiro migrated to the backlands of Alagoas, in the Pedra region, where he accomplished his greatest feat: he built a sewing thread factory to break the English monopoly, implemented a hydroelectric plant, brought electricity even before the state capital, built roads, railways, workers' villages, and offered working conditions far ahead of their time—decades before the CLT (Consolidation of Labor Laws). The Companhia Agro Fabril Mercantil produced more than 500,000 spools of thread per day, employing hundreds of workers and paying above-average wages. This success aroused the interest and hostility of foreign competitors, especially the English, and exacerbated local and personal conflicts. In 1917, Delmiro Gouveia was assassinated in circumstances that have never been fully clarified. After his death, his empire was dismantled, his factory destroyed, and his machinery thrown off a cliff. Yet, his legacy remained alive. The former Pedra (stone) became known as Delmiro Gouveia, a city that today bears his name and his history. This is the story of a visionary who dared to confront colonels, politicians, and international monopolies, and who proved that development could also be born in the backlands. An epic, tragic, and inspiring story—one that deserves to be told.
