Maasai Mara: A Chant and the Adumu Jump

During our Maasai Mara safari, we visited a Maasai village and witnessed their chant and the Adumu, the warriors' jumping dance. They showed us how, using just wood, they can light a fire. We then walked through their homestead. That night, back at our hotel, the chant returned. You can see it all in this video. Location: Maasai Mara, Kenya | Recorded: May 2024 This is part of our Kenya Safari series, real footage. Cattle provide milk, meat, and blood, the three traditional staples of the Maasai diet, and a family's wealth has historically been measured in the size of its herd rather than in money or land. Maasai society is organized around an age-set system. Boys move through circumcision into moranhood, spending years as warriors (moran) responsible for protecting the community and its livestock, before eventually graduating into elderhood through a ceremony called eunoto. Only after this transition can a man marry and start a household of his own. Women are not assigned their own age-set; they are recognized through their husband's, and they carry the responsibility of building the family home, a circular structure called a boma or manyatta, made from mud, sticks, grass, and cow dung, arranged around a central livestock enclosure. The Adumu, widely known outside the community as the jumping dance, is performed by warriors taking turns leaping straight-backed from a standing position, while the group keeps rhythm through chant alone. Traditionally, the height of a warrior's jump has been seen as a visible marker of strength and stamina. The chants themselves follow a call-and-response pattern led by a designated lead singer, layered with rhythmic guttural vocals, and performed entirely without instruments. Beadwork is another central part of Maasai identity. Patterns and colors are not decorative alone. They can signal a wearer's age-set, status, or marital situation, and the craft is passed down and practiced almost entirely by Maasai women.
