I left all that as it is because it was deliberately designed to get the player to adapt and evolve by racking up points to get the options needed, hence the Darwin theme. What ship might work for one level might not work for another level, and you can't just change your ship on the fly. Also after repeated frustrations I finally adjusted the Lives settings to 7 (again, the Darwin theme) near the end of the game, and that helped tremendously!
