Messina is a historic city located in the northeast of the island of Sicily, right at the tip of the strait that separates the island from the Italian mainland, the Strait of Messina. It has held enormous strategic and cultural importance since antiquity. Founded by Greek colonists around the 8th century BC, under the name Zancle, it later became known as Messina. Throughout history, it was dominated by Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, and Normans—resulting in a rich mix of architectural and cultural influences. One of the city's most famous landmarks is the Messina Cathedral, renowned for its astronomical clock, considered one of the largest and most complex in the world. Every day at noon, the clock presents a mechanical spectacle with moving figures. Messina has also been marked by tragic events, especially the 1908 Messina earthquake, one of the most devastating in European history, which destroyed much of the city and caused tens of thousands of deaths. Therefore, much of the current architecture is more modern, a result of 20th-century reconstruction. Today, Messina is an important port and gateway to Sicily, connecting the island to the rest of Italy. Furthermore, the city is known for its cuisine, especially its seafood dishes and typical Sicilian sweets.
