1972 Toyota Corolla: Creating a Daily Driver

1972 Toyota Corolla Build: Turning a Classic T27 Into a Reliable Daily Driver Hey everyone, welcome to the channel! This is the start of my journey with a 1972 Toyota Corolla T27, a classic I bought sight unseen in 2021 from a neighboring province. It hadn't been registered since the early 1990s, and when it showed up, it was in rough shape. Definitely a project car, but I saw potential. Under the hood is a 1.6L 2TG engine, which I believe was either imported from Japan or swapped in, since this engine was never stock in North American models. The previous owner had plans to turn it into a drag car, and it shows: EFI conversion with SDS, individual throttle bodies (ITBs), a racing inline fuel pump with sketchy wiring, and a camshaft setup that gives it that chugging, lumpy idle. After some tuning, it made around 125 horsepower, but driving it is still a challenge. The cam profile makes the throttle way too sensitive, it lurches and bucks at certain RPMs and is practically impossible to cruise smoothly. Coming from my 1976 Toyota Hilux, which was smooth and dependable, this thing feels wild and unpredictable. My goal is to turn this vintage Corolla into a reliable, quiet, smooth daily driver, what I like to call “a grandpa car.” Something that still has character and pep, but that I can drive every day, listen to music, and not worry about breaking down. This series will document every phase of the build: Undercarriage work, and minor rust repair Replacing the aggressive camshafts, for better drivability Fuel system upgrades Electrical rewiring, and cleanup Soundproofing, ECU work, and possibly paint and bodywork, later on Full transparency, I’m not a mechanic. I’ve got no tools, minimal experience, and a lot to learn. This is about keeping a classic Toyota alive, and turning it into something that fits my lifestyle.
