3 February 2022 l Overberg Geoscientists Group & Bruce Cairncross History of the Kalahari manganese field and its remarkable minerals The Kalahari Manganese Field (KMF) is located in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. It hosts the world's largest land-based manganese deposits and is South Africa's premier mineral specimen locality. The presentation by Prof Cairncross, will give a brief overview of the discovery, history and geology of the manganese field. The talk will then focus on selected minerals that have made the Kalahari manganese mines world-famous, and some of the type-species first discovered in the KMF. Bruce, having visited the mines on numerous occasions, will be showing underground and scenic photographs to supplement the featured mineral specimens.
