It is located in the central-eastern portion of the island of Malta, and the historical city has a population of 6,444. Valletta is the smallest national capital in the European Union by population. Valletta was founded in 1566 by the Knights of St. John, a Roman Catholic military order. The city is named after Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette.
