Painting the Arakawa tram line #01

See the finished piece here: http://mattjabbar.tumblr.com/post/178... Somewhat experimental illustration this time. I wanted to do something based on the cute Arakawa tram line that runs through Tokyo. This is the only remaining Tokyo tram - the line is made from pieces of other, already closed lines. We went with Kana to do some location hunting walking the whole length of the line and taking many, many pictures in 2017 and I wanted to make something with them since. Recently, I also wanted to try a little bit more simple, illustration-like style of drawing and to practice drawing and designing characters. I decided to use the photos we took to make this illustration including one of the places we photographed and also some characters inspired by the people we saw. The lines in this piece are done using a LAMY Safari M fountain pen with the Sailor Sei-Boku dark blue ink. the pen works surprisingly well on watercolor paper and the pigment-based ink is waterproof which makes it possible to paint over it with watercolors!
