Surva in Pernik is one of the oldest and most spectacular folk festivals in Bulgaria. For over four hours, we filmed the extraordinary Kukeri ritual – a colorful, loud, and symbolically rich performance intended to ward off evil spirits and ensure health, fertility, and prosperity for the new year. In the film, you'll see powerful masks, heavy bells, and figures of a priest, a bride and groom, elders, demons, and a bear – symbols of the power of nature and rebirth. Kukeri perform in groups ranging from a dozen to over a hundred, creating one large, collective communal ritual.
