South Africa - Ramaphosa Changes Post
(14 Apr 1996) T/I: 10:10:45 GS 10:25:40 Leading South African politician Cyril Ramaphosa, an outside contender to succeed President Nelson Mandela, announced on Saturday (13/4) that he is to leave Parliament for a high-powered business post. However, Ramaphosa, a charismatic former union leader who played a key role against South Africa's old apartheid regime, will retain his position as secretary general of Mandela's African National Congress (ANC). Ramaphosa will take a senior post in New Africa Investments, a black-owned conglomerate fast emerging as a major player in a business scene long dominated by whites. The shift of such a key political figure to business marks the biggest move yet in black economic empowerment in Mandela's new South Africa. SHOWS: JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA 13/4 WS of President Nelson Mandela and Ramaphosa SOT Mandela announcing that Ramaphosa would take up a position with the private sector; that he would resign from parliament, but would remain secretary general of the ANC; and commending Ramaphosa for his contribution to the ANC and the nation-building effort; SOT Ramaphosa saying his position in the ANC would remain unchanged, but that his involvement in the ANC and the private sector would be discussed in further detail at a later stage.
